Wave of mass layoffs is expected to hit PlayStation
The rumors about the imminent closure of traditional studios within Xbox, which had already been worrying employees at Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Arkane Studios, seem to be just the tip of a much deeper and more frightening iceberg. Behind-the-scenes reports indicate that Sony is preparing to follow the same path of aggressive cuts. The French journalist Sylvain Trinel supported the information from sources like Jason Schreier from Bloomberg and Mike Straw from Insider Gaming, suggesting that the severe restructuring of the tech market will reach catastrophic levels from July 1, 2027, hitting PlayStation Studios hard.
“Keep an eye on the month of July (but not necessarily on the studios you mentioned),” Sylvain Trinel warned when asked if the corporate backlash would be focused on Bungie and Housemarque due to the fluctuating commercial performances of projects like Marathon and Saros. When detailing whether the cuts would affect the industry in general or specifically the subsidiaries of the Japanese giant, the journalist was categorical in responding “both.”
This wave of layoffs anticipated for next month exposes the collapse of the business model based on inflated budgets and the obsession with games as a service, which platform holders have tried to forcefully push onto the public. It's disheartening to see that historic brands, which shaped the identity of the console ecosystem, are treated as disposable pieces to correct financial forecast errors made by high-level executives who remain shielded in their positions.
The turbulence behind the scenes is not expected to spare other giants in digital entertainment. The list of companies affected by rumors of cuts and closures includes major names like Bethesda, Quantic Dream, and BioWare.
This scorched-earth scenario creates a climate of widespread panic among developers, who must now deal with the lack of institutional transparency while the market speculates on which brands will cease to exist. Seeing Sony join this process of creative depletion proves that no producer is secure in this generation, turning what should be a period of technological advancement into an authentic grinder of talented studios.
