Todd Howard praises Marvel's Blade and reassures Arkane fans
All this backstage commotion started because of the noisy game of musical chairs that Microsoft's gaming division has been dealing with. Reports from major outlets like Bloomberg, Kotaku, The Verge, and Game File have revealed that several Xbox studios were on the edge due to the aggressive restructuring plan led by Asha Sharma. Journalist Mike Straw from Insider Gaming reported that the French branch was going through serious troubles and that the vampire game was in real danger of being shelved permanently. This is a constant in the current market: companies announce grand projects just to appease shareholders at big events, but behind the scenes, developers suffer from the instability of sudden budget cuts.
During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Todd Howard, the director of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, was asked about the progress of the production based on Marvel's vampire hunter. He confirmed having seen a recent internal demo and praised the pace of its development.
“I can't say when we will see more of the game, but I saw some things just yesterday and the team at Arkane is doing a really great job”
The project was originally unveiled with great fanfare on the stage of The Game Awards in 2023, marking a comeback for Arkane Lyon following their acclaimed release of Deathloop. The plan to adapt the comic book hero — immortalized in films by Wesley Snipes — generated a huge buzz, but the publisher simply disappeared from the map shortly after, adopting complete silence on platforms, mechanics, or a release date. This industry habit of showing off logos and concept trailers years before a game has a solid playable foundation is a disservice, merely inflating consumers' empty expectations.
Without addressing the rumors predicting the closure of the Lyon headquarters, the director's stance serves as a cold shower on the general pessimism. After all, it would be a huge misstep for a public figure of Howard's stature to publicly praise the progress of software on the verge of being scrapped by higher-ups.
The platform owner has not confirmed any of the press's alarming theories, but the community remains attentive to the developments of this corporate transition. Knowing that development continues to breathe behind the scenes is a relief, but the public will only truly relax when Xbox decides to show real gameplay footage instead of corporate promises in interviews. For now, the title continues to move forward in the dark, trying to survive the instability of its own parent company.
