That's a pretty varied selection that covers a whole range of different genres!\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>These four games beat out the likes of Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, PaRappa the Rapper, and a handful of other popular titles. Many of these will likely get another shot at a spot next year, however. Both the first Pac-Man and the original The Legend of Zelda are already in the hall of fame, having earned their spots in 2015 and 2016, respectively, but these later entries in the series are equally as revolutionary.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Ms. Pac-Man introduces four multi-coloured mazes and a degree of randomness to gameplay that made it much more challenging. the character has also been the victim of multiple lawsuits and copyright issues over the years, so it's fantastic to see the game get some recognition.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Ocarina of Time marked the Hero of Time's 3D debut, and it completely shaped the future of 3D action games. The world was huge, lock-on was a boon, and the degree of freedom was outstanding. This means that all compiled code in the game has been turned into human-readable C code. We thought for a time that we may never be able to match every function completely, so this is an incredibly exciting accomplishment.”\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>It is! What’s so impressive about these efforts is that nothing was stolen or leaked or pirated. These fans have simply rebuilt the entire game’s code—albeit “using modern coding languages”—from scratch, to the point where it functionally performs identically to the original. This means there’s an expectation that \u003Cem>technically\u003C\u002Fem> they’ve done nothing illegal. How legally \u003Cem>certain \u003C\u002Fem>that is remains to be seen, but for reference the reverse engineered \u003Cem>Super Mario 64\u003C\u002Fem> code is still available at its source, despite Nintendo going after some projects which built off that code.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>That legal shift kicks in when you start talking about assets and characters, so while the code itself is hoped to be safe from Nintendo’s lawyers, the second you start adding anything on top of that code to make it look and sound like \u003Cem>Ocarina of Time \u003C\u002Fem>in a playable sense, you’re in trouble.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Not that the threat of legal action from Nintendo has ever or will ever stop fans from this kind of work. Now, in a bit of an update, last year's gigaleak has pulled through with a new Nintendo document that seemingly reinforces the existence of this project.
