Sea of Thieves will receive a live-action film adaptation for the cinemas.
The strategy is part of an aggressive expansion plan for Xbox, which has been aiming to push its brands into cinema and television on the heels of successful productions like Fallout and the upcoming A Minecraft Movie. However, turning a game focused solely on online interactions into a Hollywood film is a daunting task, risking becoming just another generic pirate adventure devoid of the identity that fans built on the servers. The film's production will be under the responsibility of Destin Daniel Cretton, a filmmaker with experience in blockbusters like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: A New Day, who will use his production company, Hisako Films, to bring the project to life. So far, no director has been hired to lead the filming.
The official announcement of Microsoft's plans was released by Entertainment Weekly, confirming that the tech giant has given the go-ahead for adapting the work developed by Rare. The big question among enthusiasts is how the writers will navigate the complete absence of a linear storyline or familiar figures in the gameplay, as the title functions as a blank canvas for a group of friends to create their own mishaps at sea.
Xbox's head of content, Matt Booty, addressed this challenge in a press statement, acknowledging the structural differences compared to other in-house brands like Halo or Gears of War.
“The main character in Sea of Thieves is actually the player and the community”
This lack of a traditional narrative thread compels the creative team to explore alternative paths for the film's construction. The executive argued that the vivid personality developed by the gaming community over the years will be the real foundation of the cinematic narrative.
“When you stop to think about Sea of Thieves, it’s not about who the main characters are or what the plot is. It’s an extremely social game. There’s a very specific tone in Sea of Thieves. It was built upon an incredibly cooperative community, so you can already envision how that might work.”
Trying to replicate the sense of camaraderie and slapstick humor of naval battles in a two-hour closed script demands a tremendous juggling act that few adaptations have managed to deliver with dignity. For now, the production remains in its early stages, with no hints about the chosen cast, the screenwriter in charge, or a release date in theaters. The developer will have to strive to ensure that this endeavor doesn't end up sinking in the sea of irrelevance.
