Public reacts with fury to Sony's post about Spider-Man
The hasty decision to eliminate disc media took its toll on the manufacturer's public image, leading to two public relations crises in a very short period of time. Recently, the company sparked outrage by confirming that more than 500 movies would be summarily deleted from its virtual platform, revoking access even for users who had already paid for the files in their personal accounts. Coupling this digital confiscation with the death decree of the physical format for the next hardware was a grave strategic error, undermining the trust of veteran consumers who invested years building their libraries on the platform.
The unfortunate post appeared on the main Sony profile, where the marketing team attempted to engage the public by reminding them that the calendar had entered the release month of the movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The post was overwhelmed by a flood of legitimate protests and biting jokes in the last hours. The community held no punches in digging up the past, flooding the comment section with memes that recall the historic E3 2013 conference, an event where the Japanese giant publicly mocked the restrictive digital policies that Xbox tried to push at the time. It’s shameful to see how the company has adopted exactly the same arrogant stance it criticized in the past, resorting to blatant corporate greed to force a virtual monopoly on gamers.
The online protests took on the shape of an organized boycott, with hundreds of profiles declaring they will ignore the future PS6 if the absence of disc drives is confirmed. Images of empty game boxes and ironic alterations of the brand's classic slogans — transformed by users into variants such as “Play Has Limits” — set the tone of the widespread discontent felt by a betrayed audience.
The top management of Sony Interactive Entertainment eventually ordered a strategic retreat and a temporary silence across official communication channels right after dropping the bombshell about the end of discs in PlayStation devices. This attempt to dodge the debate proves that the board knew about the measure's negative impact, but the planned isolation failed because different internal sectors of the multinational did not align their advertising posts. This lack of coordination turned the announcement of an anticipated film into a veritable wall of lamentations, marking one of the darkest and most unforgettable weeks for those who closely follow the industry.
