Midgar Studio closes its doors after judicial liquidation

Losing yet another creative team underscores the bleak landscape and harsh volatility that have relentlessly affected the gaming industry in recent years. The shutdown of Midgar Studio was finalized following a court order mandating the official liquidation of the France-based developer. The studio’s founder and current CTO of Nacon, Jérémy Zeler-Maury, confirmed the bitter outcome through a statement on LinkedIn. Nacon, the studio’s owner, attempted to negotiate a sale of the operation to another investment group, but a lack of interested buyers willing to close the deal within the court’s deadline marked the end of the road. It’s estimated that 30 to 50 skilled professionals were cut from the team in this process.

The abrupt shutdown casts a huge shadow of doubt over the fate of the RPG Edge of Memories, which was scheduled for release later this year and now faces an uncertain future.

Leadership appeals urge other companies in the sector to absorb the skilled workforce now left unemployed.

The company’s journey spanned almost two decades in the development of video games.

“What started as a somewhat crazy idea turned into eighteen years of work, creation, challenges, encounters, and memories. Midgar is the work we did on Hover, Edge of Eternity, Edge of Memories, and in every project, prototype, idea, and world that passed through the studio. But above all, Midgar is the people who brought our games to life, and everyone who contributed to this journey.”

The executive made a point of highlighting that the team has a valuable technical background, openly urging recruiters and competing studios to take note of the talents now available in the market. It's disheartening to see that even well-known productions like Edge of Eternity and Hover weren’t enough to shield the studio against management failures and corporate disinterest from its parent company. When a publisher struggles to find sustainable commercial solutions for its subsidiaries, the highest price is paid by the developers who dedicated years of life to their projects.
