This silent shockwave hits the suppliers within the industry hard. The entire network of partner studios that provided support services for major brands like Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, and Arkane Studios was severely impacted by the budget decisions made by the Xbox board. The worst part of this whole situation is the professional isolation imposed on the affected workers: due to the strict confidentiality agreements in place, programmers and artists who were laid off from canceled projects, which had not even been announced to the public, are strictly prohibited from including these works in their resumes, portfolios, or sharing any concept art produced, making it incredibly difficult to seek new opportunities in an already extremely saturated and hostile job market.

The tech giant's attempt to mask the gravity of the situation behind the scenes is quite disappointing. Renowned journalist Jason Schreier brought to light crucial details about how the restructuring promoted by the American company caused much greater damage than the official public relations data let on. Although the company confirmed the dismissal of 3,200 employees throughout 2026, the sale of four studios, and the search for a buyer for Arkane Studios, the reality hidden beneath the surface points to an immeasurable human impact. Executive Asha Sharma even publicly stated that no previously announced game had been canceled, a corporate maneuver rehearsed to convey the false impression of stability, deliberately omitting the massive number of in-house projects in the early stages of development that were simply discarded.

By canceling secret projects, the company shifts the loss to smaller third-party producers, creating a kind of invisible layoff that doesn't make it into the press statistics.

The situation with the Perfect Dark project perfectly illustrates this detrimental dynamic. The Xbox division chose to shut down the developer The Initiative and permanently cancel the game’s development, a decision that collapsed a complex web of contracts with various external support producers directly collaborating on the production. Since these service providers signed strict agreements preventing them from disclosing any affiliation with the brand, they end up silently laying off their own employees to adjust their finances after losing the contract, operating as an invisible collateral damage that the console's owner refuses to publicly acknowledge.

Another emblematic case of interference and severe cuts involves Obsidian and the cancellation of multiple projects that never even came to the gamers' community's attention. Among the most notable losses of the package is the development of Grounded 2, a sequel that was being handled primarily by the programmers and designers at partner Eidos Montreal. The abrupt interruption of these workflows caused a cascading effect of staff cuts at these third-party developers, making it clear that the publicized dismissal numbers are just the tip of the iceberg of a scorched earth scenario. It is sad to see a brand that always promised to expand the industry acting in such a predatory and opaque manner towards the gears that keep the gaming ecosystem running.
