The dismantling conducted by the tech giant in the gaming division of Xbox is far deeper and more alarming than official statements initially suggested. According to findings revealed publicly by the portal Game File, the development team of The Elder Scrolls Online was nearly decapitated after the round of cuts that took place last week. It was discovered that Joe Burba, who had been leading ZeniMax Online Studios since July 2025, is out of the studio. The wave of mandatory departures also took away executive producer Susan Kath, veteran game director Rich Lambert, and production director Ala Diaz. Losing the key creative and administrative minds guiding the destiny of the fantasy game all at once is a harsh blow, revealing the corporate leadership’s lack of sensitivity towards the technical direction of its own products.

This quiet cleanup at the top echelon is part of a documented plan for drastic staff cuts officially filed with the state of Maryland, USA. Altogether, Microsoft eliminated 379 jobs associated with the ZeniMax brand in the region, with over 200 of these positions directly belonging to the studio responsible for the online RPG. The remaining cuts affected Bethesda employees and publishing teams. Initially, the company tried to cover up the information that the studio’s top executives had been dismantled, but the truth eventually emerged in public records. It is regretful to see skilled professionals being dismissed in this way, especially knowing that the developer had already been struggling during the leadership of Phil Spencer when a secret project was summarily canceled by management.

The new leadership will take over with the challenging task of holding the fort in a visibly shaken studio.

To fill the gaps left by the layoffs, the Xbox division announced that the developer’s operations leadership will be taken over by Josh Henderson, who previously managed the company’s business transactions. Alongside him, Nick Giacomini will assume creative control of the main game, having been promoted to director of The Elder Scrolls Online last August. In a statement sent to reassure the remaining team, the dismissed executives stated that they intend to remain in the office over the next few months only to ensure that the transition of tasks occurs smoothly and gradually.

All these developments are part of an abrupt shift in strategic posture by the console manufacturer, which seems to be prioritizing blind cost-cutting over the long-term support for its creative teams. By enforcing mass layoffs and dismantling structured studios, the company signals to the market that it prefers to concentrate resources solely on its more established and easily monetized brands. This short-term stance drains the technical talent from the gaming industry and leaves subscribers questioning the brand's actual ability to maintain the quality of forthcoming productions.
